Your weekly news from Scarcroft School

11th July 2025

Welcome to our weekly roundup!

Dear parents and carers,

I’m writing to you after another chocker block fortnight in school. We’ve had netball tournaments, football tournaments, transition mornings, teddy bears’ picnics, French cafe, Woodland Adventure, Sports Fest, Year 6 plays…the list goes on! As a result, I’m sure you can imagine, everyone’s happy but very tired! One week to go! Please see the table below for dates for your diary.

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone this afternoon to the summer fair, organised by FOSS. A huge thank you as ever to them – we’re very grateful for all that they do.

Please note that next week we will be unable to have our usual end of term water fight due to the hosepipe ban. Instead we will have a FOSS-hosted barbecue, music and tuck-shop, followed by…I’m sorry to say…a gunging of myself and Mr Cole 🙂

Keep an eye out next week for emails regarding our Year 4, 5 and 6 residentials for next academic year. Parent Pay will open to start payments towards the trips. Further details to follow.

Reception

This week we had lots of amazing parent volunteers come to our Reception class and tell us all about their jobs. The children have absolutely loved having these sessions, especially getting to try on the outfits and props!

This week the children designed and made their own clay animals. They did a fantastic job of moulding, using a wide range of tools and also making their own slip to stick the parts together. Well done Reception!

Year 1

In our Art topic, we have been working collaboratively to create a giant spider. First we rolled up paper, then we folded it and secured it with lots of tape. Finally we painted it. Look at our spider.

Our final visit of the year was a visit to ‘Wild Things’ forest school. We had a fantastic time exploring the pond area, making a campfire, den-building, sculpting and toasting marshmallows.

Year 2 have been learning about how to care for themselves, others and their local environment in their Learning for Life lessons. We made butterfly feeders for our colourful neighbours!

Year 3

Science – Plants

We have been investigating what plants need to grow healthily.  We found out that plants need air – otherwise they turn into mush!  We learned about the lifecycle of plants and how seeds are created.  Our favourite activity was creating a new seed which could be dispersed either by air, water or animals.  They had some very creative ideas!

Computing – Databases

This week, we have been looking at why databases are useful and where we have used them already. We had a lot of fun using monster “Top Trumps” to explore records and fields.  We then tried racing against a spreadsheet and found that the computer was much quicker every time!  We will use our new-found skills to sort and filter for our dream holiday – I’m sure there will be lots of ideas for this!

Writing

We have been working hard in the final weeks of term to create fantastic stories in the style of Beowulf. The children have really got the style of the story and have used all the elements we’ve asked for! We hope you enjoy this sample of extracts from our stories:

In the mists of the trees lay the home of death itself. At a stretch this was a cave but it was more like a torture chamber. Scattered on the ground, bones covered in newly spilt blood slept forever more. In the corner, six blood splattered chains hung ready for their next victims. You would expect a bed but there was none as it  did not need to sleep. The monster had six tails, all with sharp,knife-like blades at the end, ready for death. Its eyes were dark and soulless, its wings were fiery with fury and its mouth was hungry for blood. It was ready for a journey, a journey for war.’

As darkness fell, the old hag slumped into a deep sleep and dosed  through  the night. After hours the sun began to rise, she woke with a big frown (just like every day) but even with a frown on her face she always had something mischievous  on her mind. Her damp, ancient lair- that she hadn’t left for years-was filled with darkness and pain.’

The king Hrothgar and his Thanes were more than glad to be able to stay in Heorot (the mead hall) without fear in the air. That is, before Trulcarvius would make his uninvited entrance. The ends of his pointed wings pierced through the clouds, sensing happiness and safety. This creature from hell feasted on joy and coughed out death. Little did the Danes and the Geats know, this creature would haunt their dreams and twist them into nightmares, creep into their nightmares and flip them into reality. They would soon sleep – and wouldn’t awake.’

Computing

This week we have been coding micro:bits in computing. We have programmed polls, animations, pedometers and scoreboards! We’ve been learning how to program code for a specific task and then we’ve really enjoyed tinkering and improving our basic code!

Recognition Awards

Colliergate

Ellis – Always ready for a challenge and just ‘gets stuff done’!

All of 5 Colliergate! – for being superstars all year and always impressing me.

Skeldergate

Thomas – Fantastic engagement in learning. 100% all the time. Great geography writing too.

All of 5 Skeldergate! – For a fantastic year. It has been a really special one. They are all awesome! Thank you.

Year 6

School of Pop

As we are fast approaching the end of this Year 6 cohort’s time at Scarcroft, we have been flat out in play rehearsal! We can assuredly say that this group of children have delivered the loudest, most confident leavers’ play that we have seen for years. What a bunch of stars!

Crucial Crew

We visited York College for Crucial Crew, an annual offering co-ordinated by North Yorkshire Police. The children had workshops around the theme of staying safe from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue; York Rescue Boat; the Youth Justice Service and Change Grow Live; North Yorkshire Police; City of York Council; and IDAS. The children were fantastic, joining in with everything and being sensible around some sensitive topics. Thanks to PCSO Harper and PC Brook for organising.

Sex Education

As per our letter on Class Dojo, the children are doing some curriculum sessions on sex education. Please be aware they may come home with questions.

Last Day of Term

The leavers’ assembly will take place at 9:00am on Friday 18th July (the last day of term). The children can bring a t-shirt and pens to be signed by each other. We will also make a leavers’ book for the children to get signed by staff and other pupils. Apparently, a year 6 teacher is getting gunged as a result of the FOSS Curry and Quiz night so there’s that to look forward to…

Recognition Awards

Orla Murray – Orla is an all-round superstar and sums up what we would love a Scarcroft pupil to be: engaged and curious in lessons; kind and caring towards others; up for joining in with everything; striving to improve. Her understanding of and love for a huge range of topics inspires us.

Harry Vu – Harry made the most amazing improvement in his acting for our Leavers’ Prop, moving from anxious and embarrassed to loud, confident and hilarious. Wow!

Abi Wallis and Piper McCabe – kindness trophy – While these two have previously been recognised for their individual kindness, it has been lovely to see them take the lead as Eco Councillors recently, helping our class and both Year 1 classes to record their methods of transport to school, offering to help the younger classes without even being asked.
