English as an Additional Language (EAL)

With over 27 languages spoken at Scarcroft, we value the diversity that multilingualism brings to our school community. We support our children using English as an additional language (EAL) to develop their proficiency in English, so ensuring they can gain full access to the curriculum.

Our provision encompasses three main strands:

1. Provision around learning: this can include environmental support such as visual timetables and routine prompts to support pupils with EAL.
2. Provision within learning: this can include adaptive teaching and resources designed to support an individual pupil’s learning journey. Where appropriate, it may include small group interventions specifically focussed on English language development.
3. Community membership: at Scarcroft we ensure that pupils with EAL are included in all aspects of school life. We seek to celebrate our multilingualism and rich cultural diversity with events such as our annual ‘International Day’.

Our approach to supporting pupils with EAL is guided by the five principles of EAL pedagogy published by the Bell Foundation. These principles inform the way we plan for, teach and assess pupils with EAL.
