English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

With over 20 different languages spoken at Scarcroft Primary School it is important that children using English as an Additional Language (EAL) are well supported in developing their proficiency in English language whilst also recognising that multilingualism is an asset too.

We think about our provision in three overarching strands:

  1. Provision around learning – How does the environment support pupils using EAL?
  2. Provision within learning – How are activities and how is the learning journey organised to meet the needs of the child
  3. Community membership – Ensuring that pupils with EAL are included in all aspects of school life

As professionals, we are also guided by the five principles to guide EAL pedagogy, published by The Bell Foundation. These approaches steer our planning, teaching and assessment of pupils using EAL.
