Welcome to our latest newsletter!
I want to begin by saying how super proud I am of all the children and the way they have settled back into school life. Walking around school, seeing their focus, energy, and big smiles, has been a joy. It was also lovely to hold our first Recognition Assembly of the year today. Celebrating everybody’s hard work and positive attitude to learning and the wider life of school is always a highlight of the week – especially when the children are belting out a rendition of ‘Power in Me’ at the top of their lungs.Â
Cross Country
A massive well done to our Key Stage 2 runners who competed in the Cross Country competition at Millthorpe last night. It was a brilliant effort by all involved, showing incredible determination and fantastic team spirit! As ever, the children were a credit to Scarcroft.Â
Nest and Den developments
Our new Nest and Den spaces are now in full swing and working brilliantly well. A huge well done to the children accessing those spaces – I am so proud of how brilliantly they are settling in and engaging with their learning environments.
Launching OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)
We are excited to announce the launch of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme at our school! OPAL transforms playtimes into rich, creative, and active outdoor learning experiences. To help us kick this off, we kindly ask all parents and carers to complete the short survey attached to this newsletter. The children will be completing their own survey in school, so your insights will give us the full picture as we design the best play environment possible.

Sharing the joy of reading
The newly trained Year 6 librarians have been working hard boxing books to donate
to schools in Ghana. The charity ‘Learning for Life Ghana’ are shipping out a
consignment at the end of this month. It is wonderful to think that books we don’t
need – duplicates and old phonics series we no longer use – will find a new life
supporting literacy in Africa.

We are so proud of our new Reception children. We’ve had a fabulous first couple of weeks getting to know each other and our classroom. We have made lots of new friends as well as starting to learn to read already!Â
We love to sing! We have sung lots of number rhymes to practise our maths skills and we have been learning ‘Give It All You Got’, one of our school songs.
We have had a wonderful start to the new term in Year 1/2! It has been a delight getting to know our Year 1s and welcoming back our Year 2s.Â
The children had lots of fun solving then creating their own mazes last week after reading the Percy the Park Keeper book ‘The Secret Path’.
Then, in Maths we have been rehearsing basic number skills and recognising and making 2D shapes.
In Maths, we have also been representing objects of different amounts.
We loved celebrating International Dot Day – a day to celebrate creativity!

Micklegate
Violet –  Violet was chosen to receive our first whole school ‘Healthy’ trophy for showing such enthusiasm and determination in her PE lesson. She completed every activity by giving 100% effort, and did so with a dazzling smile on her face!
Freddie –Â Freddie earned our first class recognition award for being ready to listen and learn and giving his absolute best in all of his independent work so far. A really impressive start to Year 1!
Fishergate
Eli – For jumping into life in Y1 with no hesitation! You are always ready, always engaged and always raring to do the next job. I can always count on you and you beaming smile. You’re a star Eli!
Stonegate
Miles – For being the biggest helper in our first two weeks at school. I am so impressed with how kind, considerate and helpful you are to the other children in our class. You always look out for extra jobs to be doing and show silver behaviour at all times. Well Done Miles!
It has been such a pleasure getting to know our fantastic new classes and introducing them to Key Stage 2 routines. They have taken to it with gusto, diving straight into our new book for writing: The First Drawing. In maths, we have started with place value of numbers up to a thousand.
History
Our history topic this half term is the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We kicked off our learning by finding out how objects were made in the Stone Age, discovering that it was much harder than simply popping to the shops! Our children carved spear and ax heads from soap.  We have also had a go at picturing how long ago the Stone Age was using a floor timeline to help us understand.
PSHE
In our first lesson this year, we discussed why rules are important and how they keep us safe and comfortable in our PSHE sessions. We came up with our own class rules for discussions in PSHE.
This half term, we will be learning about how we connect with others, focusing on how we can be a good friend and family member.
International Dot Day
We had a lovely time on International Dot Day. We looked at the story of The Dot which shows that everyone can be an artist. They decorated their dots and all came up with a beautiful work of art.

Coppergate
Laina – She has started the year as she means to go on, showing a fantastic hardworking attitude and careful listening. She demonstrated kindness during the cross-country trials by looking after others. A great start to Year 3!
Determination Trophy – Finn – for already thinking about how he can do his best in writing. Keep it up Finn!
Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate
Toby – Toby has made an excellent start to year 3! I know it’s only early in the year but he seems to embody ALL of our school values of being Spirited, Healthy, Curious, Kind, Creative and Determined!
We have had a wonderful start to Year 4! The children have really thrown themselves into the learning, it’s been great getting to know them.Â
Art
We have started the year with lots of art! The children have produced some beautiful drawings exploring tone, texture and proportion.

Science
In science we’ve been looking at the human digestive system. We did our own experiment mimicking the digestive system using a potato masher, funnel, plastic bag, orange juice and tights!Â
Maths
The children have all logged in to their TTRS account and had a go in class. They loved practicing their times tables and are eager to learn more!Â
Recognition Awards
Petergate
Isla – received the recognition certificate for her brilliant, enthusiastic attitude to learning! Isla always has her hand up wanting to add to the class discussion, she always has insightful and interesting ideas to share. She brings so much energy to our classroom and always give 100%.Â
Adira – received the ‘creative trophy’ for this half term. I have been blown away by her incredible drawings, attention to detail and use of our key vocabulary in art. She shows a real understanding and interest and I’m excited to see more of her creativity in all subjects!
Walmgate
Effie received the recognition award for embodying all of our school values so well. She is curious about all of our learning and always asks questions. She is determined to make her work the best it can possibly be and she is spirited: always engaging in our learning with enthusiasm.Â
Hugo received the ‘Spirited’ trophy for this half term, Hugo throws himself into everything with enthusiasm and it’s infectious. He brightens up lessons and our classrooms and he’s an asset to Walmgate.
We enjoyed International Dot day on Tuesday. Make a dot and don’t stop!

Dylan – for giving a hundred percent effort and having a brilliant attitude to every lesson so far!
Skeldergate
Rahwa – for making a fabulous start to Y5. Greets me with a smile everyday and puts 100% into every lesson. A delight to have in class.
Art
For our first project after summer, the children studied a range of different artists who created work in distinctly different styles. The children chose their own style and created work to support a message they thought was important – stopping war, protecting the environment, being inclusive, etc.
Here, one person is trying to describe a piece of art by Lubiana Himid while the other draws it.
History
We have started a unit of work about World War 2. So far, we have thought about what the circumstances were in Europe that lead to war and studied how the British RAF successfully defended the skies about the UK during the Battle of Britain. We will end the topic with a visit to Eden Camp in just a couple of weeks!

Mila – for making a really positive and thoughtful start to Year 6, working hard on her content and presentation across the curriculum
CURIOUS AWARD – Lucy showed real curiosity in Science over the summer holidays and we loved her project all about the Periodic Table of Elements!
Goodramgate
Sam – What an absolute dynamo Sam is in class! Whole he can find things tricky, he never ever stops working and stops trying. He does himself proud always.Â
Kindness Award – Benji – Mrs Pagan spotted Benji in at playtime, helping one of our new starters. Benji had stopped playing his own game and gone over to help someone much younger than him who was upset. What a role model!
